Fashion Friday: The “Get Fit” Campaign

I had planned on writing today’s blog on the PERFECT pair of pants for every body type, but as I ran the Peachtree Road Race on Monday morning I realized it isn’t the style that’s so bad, it’s the FIT.

Ladies, you get fitted for a bra, why aren’t we asking professionals for help with our yoga tops? Men, you get fitted for suits, why not yoga pants?

If you are answering that with, “Girl, please. There’s no where that fits you for yoga clothes,”  you’re wrong…it’s what I do for a living.

Yoga is supposed to be about a centering of yourself and finding that quiet space within your heart. I don’t know about you, but I can’t focus on my intention when the person in front of me can’t stop fidgeting with his or her clothes. And as much as we all want to wear the bigger size because “It’s more comfortable”, the question is:

When you’re moving around are you actually comfortable?

Here are the top 5 things to try the next time you are purchasing yoga clothes:

(If these are not happening, DON’T buy it! No matter how good of a deal or how cute it may be…)

  1. Atlanta yoga stores Do the sit and squat test: Take a seat on the chair in the store or in the fitting room with your hand at the top of the pants. Did your pants move? Now do a full squat with your hand in the same place. Did your pants move now? If so, try a smaller size. The smaller size will help anchor the pants on your waist creating less movement and more comfort during your workout.
  2. Do longer tops or shorter tops: In between lengths will hit in awkward places and will ride up. Longer tops will hold onto the hips as an anchor, shorter tops will sit on the waist and won’t be affected by movement. Ladies, always check to make sure you don‘t have much cleavage. Men, check there is enough room for your shoulders so you can get full range of motion in your warrior poses.
  3. Try different brands: Not all brands are created equal! Every brand is fashioned around one particular body type, which may or may not be yours. Is it possible that the brand you have been wearing isn’t working for you? Try, try and try again.
  4. Ask the salesperson to measure your bust/chest, waist, hips and inseam length: This directly translates to your size. Don’t be victim to being sold what everyone else looks good in. Know your inseam length like it’s your birthday and if the pants are too long, have the salesperson “tack” them with pins and get them hemmed for $5 at a dry cleaner.
  5. Find the 3 way mirror and bust a move: You are buying yoga clothes so give them a test run! There’s nothing embarrassing about that. Use this time in the mirror to check for extra fabric bunching in your crotch area and behind your knees, 2 clear signs that your pants are too big. For tops, check for extra fabric in your shoulders, near the insides of your armpits, in the straps on tanks.
